Theft Crime Penalties
The penalties for any theft offense vary depending on the value of the property. The theft of items valued at less than $1,000 is considered a misdemeanor crime. Theft of an item valued at greater than $1,000 but less than $5,000 is a felony crime, and could result in up to five years in jail. Any third offense theft crime — regardless of value — could result in up to 10 years in jail.
Possession of Stolen Goods
Possession of stolen goods charges often arise in the following situations:
- When an individual steals an item but was not caught in the act (burglary), he or she may later be charged with possession of stolen goods
- When an individual purchases an item knowing it was stolen
If you have been charged with possession of stolen goods, you may be facing serious penalties including jail time. Seek advice from an attorney to explore your legal options.
